Thank you to the over 250 people who responded to the Seniors Residence Survey. Your responses showed that there is some interest in our GP Family Community for a retirement facility on the GP site, but that more data is needed.
We're excited to host our next virtual townhall and look forward to sharing updates with you, our Geneva Park community! Please find the agenda below. Timeline will be approximately an hour of updates, followed by time for breakout rooms to discuss specific subjects of interest and to catch-up socially.
After a long few months of conversations and questions, we're pleased to be able to provide an update on the communication between the YMCA Simcoe Muskoka and the Geneva Park Legacy Alliance. The intent of this update is to get our GP community up to speed on these conversations, so that we are all on a similar page and understand the current conversation and the next steps to be taken.
Recently the YMCA of Simcoe Muskoka (YSM) announced, without warning to stakeholders, their sudden intention to sell Geneva Park, the well-storied, century old leadership, youth, family and conference centre on Lake Couchiching. This iconic three kilometres of shoreline property has long been home to outdoor education programs, a family camping community for generations, youth leadership training and a destination for diverse groups providing unique opportunities to experience independence and personal empowerment.
Selling the YMCA Geneva Park Leadership Centre is not the immediate goal of the organization, though it is still a possibility.
As a result of challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka announced in January its intention to sell the sprawling property and its buildings on the shore of Lake Couchiching in Ramara Township.
Helping people and groups in need is at the core of YMCA values. Geneva Park, YMCA, has provided programming to groups such as the March of Dimes, the original Camp Oochigeas, for children afflicted with cancer, in addition to religious organizations and youth leadership programs.
Geneva Park has helped those in need for its entire existence of more than a century. In addition, it is a greenspace which hosts conferences for the Assembly of First Nations, the Leacock Medal for Humour, and the renowned Couchiching Conference.
When I heard the news of the announcement that YMCA Geneva Park was might have to be sold, my heart broke. It was announced in January that this magical place that I’ve held so dear for my entire life has become another victim of COVID-19. GP has been part of my family for generations. My grandparents took their kids and my parents took us. I grew up going there every summer with my family, staying in one of the cottages, enjoying all of the amazing summer programs like making a tie-dye shirt at the Craft Shop, painting at Sunset Rock, story time at the Shire, and eating sour grape candies I found in my dollar bag at the Tuck Shop.
